The Pirate De Soto and the Doom of the Morning Star

The Pirate De Soto and the Doom of the Morning Star

CAPE TRIVIA TIME: Pirates of the Cape!

Think pirates only sailed the Caribbean?

Think again.

One of the most ruthless pirates in history, Benito de Soto, terrorist the waters right off our coastline.

In February 1828, a merchant ship named the Morning Star set sail from Ceylon, heading past the Cape of Good Hope on its way to England.

De Soto’s pirate ship, the Defensor de Pedro, ambushed them.

The pirates boarded the vessel, imprisoned the survivors below deck, cut away the masts and deliberately damaged the hull, leaving the ship to sink.

Miraculously, the passengers managed to break free, plug the leaks, and survive to tell the tale – leading to a global manhunt for De Soto!
