Secret VOC diaries whisper that he quietly sailed a captured Spanish galleon down into the freezing, lawless waters of the South African coast.
To escape his pursuers, lore says he anchored in a pitch-black, storm-ridden bay near Slangkop (Kommetjie), dragging a heavy iron-bound chest filled with plundered Spanish silver pieces-of-eight coins deep into the coastal caverns before his ship vanished into the mist.
